Although I opened the article to the second page and read that before reading the first page, I was very shockingly interested. I am quite unbiased when it comes to situations like this. I guess I just think that this is the reason that I voted personally. Things like this cannot go on any longer under these circumstances. I must agree that decisions should not be made until there is a very clear and precise drawn up plan to go by. There can be various outcomes but I am personally glad to know that the man in the White House is ready and willing to step in and take care of some of the seemingly minor yet so very important issues.
Bonner Looove. =)
I believe that the confessions were drawn out of prisoners. I also think that many of the prisoners were guilty for the actions that they committed or were going to commit. I think that the prison should be kept open but the tactics used should be gone with. I dont think that you can just throw these people in a jail with regular prisoners therefore the site should be re-opened. I think that more thought and arguments should be put in to this big decision from both the republicans and the democrats. The release of these prisoners could become a major national security threat to the united states.
I read the article and I think Obama acted too quickly. He should have had a plan for what would happen with the detainees before he closed the prison. I'm not saying that Gitmo should remain open, however closing it down will release many very dangerous criminals. As the article said the information that was obtained at Gitmo through various methods of torture will not be used in court. This will lead to very dangerous people that are threats to the safety of the citizens of the United States being free again. Although the idea was good the execution of it was flawed in my opinion.
I agree with Hannah that Obama definitely acted too fast with signing this into action. I understand that Obama wants people to believe that he is an honest man that will make good on all of his campaign promises, but he still needs to take into account the consequences of rash actions. I think that before anything with Gitmo goes any further, they need a solid plan, including where to relocate every single prisoner in the prison. The longer it takes for this to happen, the more it will make Obama look bad, another reason why I think he acted way too soon on this idea
I'm the kind of person to not make a decision until it has been completely thought out and the consequences have been weighed. I think Obama rushed into things. I understand his want to have people believe that he is going to follow through. I think these kinds of things are really important for everyone in the country to know about and be aware of. The closing will release many dangerous criminals. Which is a scary thought.
After reading this article, Obama has to fix a lot of problems left from the Bush Administration which I think is unfair. Though I do agree that the camp should be closed down. We spend more money on convicts then we do on education.
Reading everyone's comments, I can't state whether or not if Obama rushed into things because we do not know how long he has been working on this and how long he has been thinking about it. I just hope everything goes as plan.
Hmm, sorry Bonners, I thought I replied to this on Friday but now I cannot find my post. Anyways, I am glad that Obama has decided to make good on his compaign and inauguration speech promises. This is a good first step towards improving our image in the world. I am sure he realizes what this means in terms of the enormous job it creates but it was something that def. needed to be done. He is sending a message to the rest of the world that the United States will no longer tolerate the torture techniques favored by the bush administration. This is also not just a symbolic act though. The people in Gitmo will finally get justice, which everyone deserves as a basic human right. There are innocent people being held there but even those who are not "innocent" deserve a fair trial.
Hope everyone is enjoying these first few weeks of the semester.
Peace,
Caitlin
