New Assignment: Identity

Over the last two weeks we have evaluated the people we are connected to; who influence us; and have started to look at who we are through writing a personal mission statement.

Please read the following poems and answer the questions below:

Identity

Identity please security do ask
As you show them your identity pass
They look at it letting you through
But its that plastic card really you
That snapshot image of your face
Is not what your identity makes
Your true Identity is much more complex
Something a mere image doesn’t reflects
The way you care or feel is part of you
Your inner soul we hope keeps you true
Perhaps you have a real gift
Or maybe others spirits you do lift
It’s the way you laugh and joke
Or the way you give others hope
Perhaps its that you fight so hard
Or that no one can ever beat u at cards
Or that you are a great cook
Identity is not just how you do look
Its how you act think what you find true
That’s the identity of being you

Micron

Identity of a person

Identity of a person
Identity signifies complexity
Identity identifies with reality
Identity is the bearer of all vanity
How does a person identify with identity?

You define yourself based on what?
They say, they say
You’re kind or moral based on what?
Or
You’re a genius and shrewd based on what?
Or
You make the perfect lover, look for no other

They say, they say
You’re strong without a thought it may not last long
Or
You’ve skills since with a record you run up high bills
Or
You are shy but no one ever talks to you or says hi
Or
You never give up because right now you are on top

They say, they say
You are generous or gregarious when all you are is conscious
Or
You’re innovative yet not the originator of the idea conceived

What are the facts?
That makes your identity intact
When change on identity has the last impact?

Identity is important because if we are to do great things with our lives, we must first have a clear understanding of what is at the very core of who we are. And I think it is such a dilemma because we never really stop and think about all the thing that make up who we are. Like the poem said, our identity is more than just a picture. It's the places we have been, the things we have done, the poeple we have known, and the experiences we have lived through that make us who we are. I think it is good especially for us first year students to be thinking about these things because college is the first step towards independence and discovering what type of person we want to be. We have all these opportunities to choose how we spend our time, who we handout with, and ultimately what will make up our identity. I feel programs like Bonner only challenge us to become better, more selfless individuals. Programs like this empower us and make us strive to be the person we want to be.

Identity is important because it is what makes people who they are. Their identity is what makes them stand out from or blend into a crowd. Identity is how the person perceives themselves and how others see them. Identity doesn't have to be complicated. If people can identify the qualities that make them who they are then there should be no problem. If there is a problem, that person needs to do some soul searching. I would say my personality makes up the biggest part of my identity. I am Emily Merritt. Some people call me weird and others call me cool. Some call me crazy and other call me chill. Some say I am openminded and others say I am opinionated. I am all these things and more. I love getting to define and know myself everyday. I am constantly learning new things and trying to improve myself. I understand that I don't know everything and want to learn all that I can. The way I can learn and develop myself is by participating in college academics and programs like Bonner. Without these programs I would not be able to experience life and learn what I need to be me.

Knowing oneself is dentrimental, before one gets to know others since identity can be shaped by other's influence. Sometimes that can be beneifical, while it can also be harmful. Identity is shaped by the way you grew up, the experiences you have had, the people you have met,and the way you led your life.
It can be difficult to recognize one's own identity because it defines you. And people are more complex, and deeper than "the picture [on an] identity pass."
It is important for people to recognize what their identity is; should be who they have always wanted to be. This process seems extremely intimidating because it is hard to define yourself, especially in words. It is important during our years in college to hold our own, and stay ourselves as we start becoming more and more idependent. Participating in Programs such as Bonner helps enrich ones character, thus becoming the individual that we have always strived to be.

Identity is important because it defines who we are, what we do, and how we do it. Most people do not know how to identify themselves because personally I think it is one of the most complicated things to do, as we experienced in our recent training. For some, this may be the easiest task they have ever received but I haven't been asked a whole lot in my life who I am, or at least from what I can remember. With the recent training, I have learned how important it is to know everything about yourself, and what makes me the person I am today. It's not that your bragging about yourself, it is simply defining yourself. I am proud of the person I have become today, because I never would have thought I would do so much. My life experiences define who I am and will continue into the future. Programs like Bonner have helped me to understand who I really am and why I make the choices I do. I guess everybody needs something like Bonner or any kind of program in their life, to see who they truly are.

Identity is important because if a person does not know who he or she is or is not aware of the things that they identify with, how is anyone around them supposed to understand them or feel connected to them or stand on common grounds with them? This whole idea of someone having an identity is only as complicated as one makes it. Yes, I have initiative. No, I may not always reinvent the wheel, but I sure do try my best to be original and to put forth my best effort. If you always question every little thing about a person's identity, yes... of course it will become complicated! I make up the most important part of my identity by being the VETO power when it comes to decision making. The fact that I am able to make my own decisions and stick by them helps define who I am, thus creating part of my identity. That is only one thing though, a person can identify with many things in their life that play an important role in shaping who or what they are... it is just a matter of picking out the ones that mean the most. I am interested in the idea of getting to know myself. I believe in the good old saying "You have to love yourself before you can ever love anyone else." I think that is important in this case because if I don't know who I am, how can I spend time trying to get to know other people? Bonner has played a huge role in defining me as a professional and as an individual. It has helped me realize that I have some unique qualities and how I can put them to use. One thing I have always known about myself is that I love meeting new people and Bonner has helped me realize that there are other ways to meet new people besides waitressing in a restaurant.

It's so easy to identify others based on their race, or based on something unusual about them, rather than identifying them based on their true personality and character. It is of great importance to first realize your own identity. Identity is important because in order to make connections with other people, you must share your own identity with them and learn who they really are. Many struggle with their identity because they are afraid to show who they really are. The world is judgmental! As for me, I consider myself very much defined by my best friends, my Indian heritage, my passion for service, and my creep factor. I've never really done exercises like this that worked towards defining myself, and although it did feel uncomfortable having to quantify myself in a statement, I truly do feel like I've grown, and gained a better hold on what my wishes and goals are for my life. Service in general is how I define myself.

Identity is important because it defines who we are. In order to understand what your goals and plans are, you must first understand who you are and what drives you. Identity is the inner workings of YOU. Identity is important because it encompasses everything about us, from whether we like spring or fall, to why we do service, it is our morals and values. It makes us who we are. Identity seems complicated because it is often hard to look inside of ourselves and define ourselves. Once a person is able to do this, it is not such a difficult thing. It is not so complicated because it is who you are, its just understanding yourself that makes it hard.
The biggest part of my identity is made up of my drive to become a doctor. I am a biology major and I am driven by the fact that I want to let people have a better life. I am driven by the fact that I have seen far too many people die awful deaths that are caused by disease, and I want to help these people gain another chance at life.
The concept of getting to know myself is something that makes me excited, yet at the same time nervous and stressed out. This may be because I have not yet truly explored all of my inner feelings enough to be able to explain them and own them as my own. This also excited me because I know that I will be able to learn so much about myself and who I am through exploring myself and my inner workings.
Bonner plays a large role in defining who I am because I have dedicated so much of my time to it. In return I have gained an experience that I could not have obtained elsewhere. This program has helped to shape me into the person I am today, and because of this the Bonner program plays a very significant role in defining myself as an individual.

Identity is important to me because it comprises us of who we are. It is more complex then those "demographic" questions on a survey, however it is not more important. It is not more important because those "demographic" questions HELP to make up the whole person. I cannot be just a female, or just black, or just a 20 year old. I am a 20 year old black female. But MOST IMPORTANTLY I am Jessica. Who Jessica? Well that is the complex part... Jessica is a person comprised of many obstacles(past), capabilities(present),and possibilities(future)all which tie into the 5 social institutes(education, religion, government, family, and economic systems)...both by choice and by force. There is nothing that comprises the "biggest part" of my identity. This is because I feel that all aspects of a person should be recognized when they accomplish something. If I were to rob a grocery store, they would say that the grocery store was robbed by a "20yr old Black Female", therefore when I become a successful lawyer who makes it on the news for helping the community why should that be any different?. I do not like to define myself in what I call "box terms" however, this is something that I have just recently thought much about. Why shouldn't I be proud to be called everything that I factually am? and this includes being a BONNER!

Identity is so important because, basically, it is who we are. Some find it complicating while others find it easy to answer 'who we are¿' But how we answer that question is also apart of the answer as well. All the different ideas of identity make up identity. It is where we are from, where are we now, where we want to go, need to go, and will go. Who we meet and know as friends, aquatances, peers, and strangers, those we do not know yet as well as how we treat each and everyone of them. It is the dreams we had when we are children, the dreams we will have when we are old and all the dreams we have in between. Our identity never stays the same, completely being changed as we live each day. It is who we believe in, who we respect, and who we love as well as those we despise, envy, and find annoying. It is what rules we break, our preferred dish, our favorite color, our ideal date, our wish-list, our status on Facebook, and the playlist we put on repeat.

The biggest part of my identity would have to be my friends. I also try to be open-minded when meeting new people. This way I can learn from their experiences and grow as a person. All of my friends help me in one way or another to make me who I am and I know that it hasn't ended yet. I am truly excited to get to know me. It will be one of the hardest things to do. It is too simply complex to be put on a paper or computer screen but as long as we know within ourselves about ourselves. I think that people need to take time to get to know themselves because if they don't who will¿

College and programs like Bonner are experiences that help make us who we are. These challenge us to grow as individuals and give us the tools we need to be who we are and become who we will be.

Identity is important because we all are individuals. We all have different talents and strengths. We need to accept who we are and use our skills to make change. It can be complicated because society gives people so many different messages. In certain situations, one is expected to be an individual while in other situations one is expected to blend in. What I do makes up my identity. My actions all go along with my beliefs. I act based on my personality and what matters to me. I love trying to figure myself out. I write a lot, and when I look over what I write, I feel like I know myself better than I did before I started writing. Bonner helps to define who I am. It shapes me to grow as a leader and establish skills and also build upon skills I already have.

Identity is important because it is how we define ourselves. I have found it difficult to define my personality because it is something that I do not often think about. I act but I rarely reflect on why it is I act as I do. I feel that our identity is who we are and who we are determines what our actions will be. I believe the biggest part of my identity is made up by myself and my family. My parents have taught me their values and in turn I have had to determine what my values are and how that effects me as a person. I find it difficult to define myself because I feel that I am constantly changing. Especially as a college student, this seems like one of the biggest times for personal exploration and change in my life. So it is difficult to nail down what my identity is at this very moment. College is a period of time for massive self exploration so I feel that we are always changing and building our identity.

1. Why is identity important?
Identity is important because it defines who you are. If you do not know your own identity then you are not confident in who you are. Without identity you have no sense in what you believe in or who you are or what is important to you. Its what makes you, you. When people lose their identity they lose themselves, they lose what type of person they are.
2. Why is it so complicated or is it?
Identity may be complicated depending on who you are and what stage of life you are in. When you are young and just coming into high school many people do not know who they are or what type of person they want to be. They face so many new ideas and situations that challenge what they have believed in that it may cause them to lose or question their identity. As you get older I think you become more confident in who you are and you know what kind of life you want to live. You find an identity that suites you.
3. What or who makes up the biggest part of your identity?
I think one of the biggest things that makes up your identity is what you believe in. The people that you surround yourself with also contribute to what your identity is.
4. How does the concept of getting to know yourself or defining yourself make you feel?
It makes me nervous if we have to share that with other people, but if it is a matter of private discovery i am alright with that. Defining myself is not something that i fear because i am confident in who i want to be. What scares me is if i start defining who i really am and i find out it is not the type of person that i want to be.
5. What role does college or programs like Bonner play in defining yourself? All the experiences we face and are a part of leave a mark on who we are. They help mold us into different people. We meet new faces, and experience new challenges and how we react to them tells a lot about the type of person we are becoming.

in my opinion, there is no way that words can define who a person is. rather, i believe, it is shown through his or her actions. identity is important because each of us has the desire to know what our purpose is, to know who we are. in actuality, we are the only ones who know ourselves completely. the only reason why identity is deemed complicated is because we aren't "linear." unlike a math problem which can be difficult to solve but has an answer eventually, we have too many facets and belifs, emotions and behaviors to be so simplistic.
i think the biggest influence upon my life is a combination of my faith and my family. i am who i am because of the influences upon me, the people that i associate myself with, the area that i grew up, and the beliefs and ideals that i have been exposed to. if i had to name a single major influence upon my identity, it would have to be God. I serve because it's my purpose. I don't feel fufilled or accomplished if i am not helping another person in the process of my actions. some people see this as an inability for me to relax. the thing that they don't realize though is that if i am not doing something practical or progressive, i become stressed and upset; i feel like i'm wasting my time. this is why being a part of bonner supports my identity, it supports my purpose in life.

Identity is extremely important because throughout life people will try to peg you for being different things and make you think you‘re someone who you really aren‘t. This is why we have to have our own sense of who we are so we can stay true to our self and not let others mold us or tell us we are something that we are not. Identity is so complex because we all change throughout our lives. We will grow from different lessons we learn and different experiences we go through. This makes it difficult for us to construct an identity that will hold true forever. Life is about growing and throughout that process we go through phases that affects us in different ways therefore our identity and who we believe ourselves to be will change. My family and friends make up the biggest part of my identity. Looking at my family I have acquired different characteristics from different members and have made them my own. One can learn my personality and who I really am by looking at my friends. These are the family I chose for myself and they are the people that no matter what happens in my life I can always be one hundred percent myself around them. It’s scary to think about getting to know myself and forming an identity. Many people take the majority of their life to figure out who they really are. Do we ever truly know completely who we are? How do we get there? How will we know this is our true self? All these thoughts run through my mind, but for now I believe I have a good sense of the type of person I am and I am very comfortable with who I’ve become. College and programs like Bonner add another aspect to our identity. Instead of saying, “Hi I am Meghan,” I can now say, “Hi I am Meghan, a Siena Bonner Service Leader Student.” Being apart of a program or club gives us something to be proud of and is another way to define ourselves. When first introducing yourself to someone and telling them your name they won’t get much form that, but saying you are a Bonner student, or an athlete or go to Siena College gives them some insight into who you really are.

I think that this blogging assignment is really really difficult because I don't really know my identity yet. I feel like people discover their true identies as they grow up and at 18 I really don't know yet. I've experienced so much at 18 yet I don't think that I am at the point in my life that I can actually identify it all and figure what it all means. Life experiences and the people you are around shape who you are and your true identity but you need time to reflect on all this and one week to think on it and then blog isn't enough... discovering who you truely are takes a lifetime and I will end this a quote from my wall "I am wise because I know I don't always know" :)

Identity is important because its makes each person unique. It is not just your social security number, but its your cultural and your lifestyle. What makes identity complicated because it is a social norm to judge a book by its cover. We judge a person by the way they are dress, the way they speak, and their actions. If society was not so judgmental of people then it wouldn't be complicated. I think Society makes the biggest part of my identity. When society wants to do one thing, I go the total opposite. Getting to know myself makes me feel confident about my future and my future goals in life. The roles that I have in my college life, makes me realize that I am great.

1. Identity is important because it defines you. Identity is the center or you actions and decisions. Your identity is a major part of life and without it you wouldn’t be, I don’t necessary think everyone knows there identity but you learn it with time.
2. Identity is so complicated because it is not black and white, it is not simply one word to describe you, and it is not simply a role you play, mother, sister, and daughter. It is a way of life, beliefs and actions.
3. I think before I use to think i made up a big part of my identity but I have realized that the people around me like my friends and family contribute. I am learning to find my own identity apart from everyone else.
4. I make me feel confused because I don’t know how to describe myself. When we were writing our mission statements I found myself writing about other people and not really about my self.
5. Bonner plays a role in defining myself because of the service we are involved it. It lets me see my true passion in life to help people. Bonner also point out to me that I have to find my true identify myself.

1. Why is identity important?
identity is important because if you cant figure out who you are, it is harder for you to relate to others. if you cant understand what you want from your own life it is hard for others to help you reach your goals. I think everywhere weve been and everything weve been doing to this point in our lives has helped to shape our identity.
the idea of identity becomes difficult and complicated because it can take a whole lifetime to figure out where you think youre supposed to be in life. I think that my family has shaped my identity more than anyone else. my parents raised me to act a certain way and everything i do is in response to how i was brought up.

The concept of getting to know myself is really important to me. i think that everyone needs to set time apart to themselves to figure out where they stand in their current situations. Bonner helps me to be myself and keep my identity firm because i gain confidence from these programs. without confidence it is easy to let others shape your identity for you.

Identity is the stuff that makes you who you are and thats what makes it important. It is difficult to find ones identity because its more than just what we look like, its the things we have experienced, the people we have met, the places we have been and the things we have learned. At this point in my life I can easily say that Siena College and the Bonner program are my identity or they have at least pushed me to find my identity. I have experienced so much through the Bonner program and became much mroe responsible and independent. It is exciting yet challenging to find myself and even a little surprising. I am excited and surprised at the person I have become.
