I will not have a winter service placement this winter because I will be abroad in Costa Rica as a part of my Tropical Biology class for all but 10 days of break. I will be thinking of you all while I'm gone though :-)

I'm not sure if this is exactly a winter service placement, but from January 4th to the 16th I'm traveling to Argentina to volunteer. I'm going through Rustic Volunteer Travel (http://www.rustic-volunteer-travel.com/) and I'm working with the Disadvantage Children Project. I'll be teaching english, organizing recreational activities, and providing support with school assignments for children between the ages of 6 and 16. Hurray!

For my winter service site, I am going to be at the Sparta Mohawk Avenue School working with my old fifth grade teacher. I'm so excited. I'm going to be helping the students in class and the teacher with planning things for class. I wanted to get a feel for working with a different age group, since i'm with all the younger kids at North Albany. I talked with the teacher and she is working on setting things up with the principle, but said it should be no problem.

Over the winter break (and hopefully beyond) i want to volunteer at Benedictine Hospital in Kingston (which IS a non-profit believe it or not) There is a wide range of volunteer oppotunities. I would like to work directly with patients in one way or another. I have also been exploring the possibility of becoming a certified EMT, i'm still looking into it though.
also, from jan 3-7 I will be going on a service project in garrison. I'm not sure where i am placed for that yet, but it will either be at a habitat for humanity site or at a daycare for autistic children. I'm pumped!

Over winter break I am going to be volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club of Northwest New Jersey at the Wayne Site. This boys and girls club is in my town. while the kids are out of school on their own break i will be working there during the day since many of the parents still work during the school breaks. I'm excited to work there not only because I used to volunteer there in the past but also because is where I spent most of my holiday break as a kid.

Also, i think it will be interesting to compare the needs, actions and behaviors of the children at the Albany boys and girls club to those at the Wayne Boys and Girls club.

Over the long needed break I will be working with Salvation Army. They have a lot for me to do such as an after school program, working in a food pantry, and maybe even one of those bell-ringers you see on the streets. I am excited to be volunteering over the break.

During winter break I will be going back to Support Connection, which is a non-profit that offers free support services to women wiht breast and ovarian cancer. I will be helping them plan their annual gala. I will also be volunteering in the afterschool program at PARC, which is a non-profit that offers services and housing to people with mental disabilities. I volunteered at both these sites over the summer so I'm very excited to go back and help out!

I will be at the Long Island Children's Museum as an Educator. The LICM is a non-for-profit organization.

My position entails interaction with children and families by explaining gallery elements to visitors. Teach educational workshops and activities. The workshops vary from Science, learning about different cultures, and art history. These workshops are based on a particular theme for the month. Teaching these workshops are beneficial to children because they are exposed to a different learning style then the typical classroom.

Each gallery is hands on and educates visitors about communication, learning about disabilities, patterns and shapes, and the environment. Elementary school teachers setup tours to the museum that go along with their lesson plans for out of the classroom learning.

I will continue my work at Green Tech Charter High School as the Service Learning Coordinator. My assignment for the winter is to contact community partners and determine volunteer requirements for school. Later in Jan. I will place all the sophomore boys at a site that I think they will have the best connection.

I too, like Amanda, am going away for most of the break. I will be going to Egypt two days after Christmas with my religion class and I will not be returning until almost mid-January. I am however goin to see if there is something I can do for the roughly 10 days I will be home.

I have not gotten a service placement yet. I am currently looking at the Big Brother Big Sister program on Long Island as the most probable place i will be working.

Hey Bonners!

I will be serving at my current placement site, the USCRI, during break. I will be wrapping up my needs assessment to increase cultural awareness and effective communication between immigrant students, teachers and the USCRI.

I will miss all of you!
