Faculty Member - Siena College President, Fr. Kevin Mullen

I met with Fr.Kevin Mullen Friday morning and I told him a little bit about myself, asked him what he knew about Bonner(he is the one that gave Dr. J the OK!), and brought him to update about what is going on in Bonner Land. Then I asked the questions and here are the answers:

1. When he came back to Siena to work in the Friary then the position for the director of Franciscan Center for Service and Advocacy opened up. Then he became the college's president.

2. On his first day as a volunteer at St. Pius (down the road) he taught a class and after that he realized he wanted to go into education.

3. Fr. Kevin Mullen has a deep passion for Medical Ethics.

Today during free period I met with Dr. Holly Cheverton, my foundations teacher. We sat down to a typical saga lunch and began chattting, but were constantly interrupted by students who came over to say hi to Holly. (She is very well known and well liked among her students and in my opinion is a good resource because of her many connections)In between the smiles and hellos from her adoring fans, I was able to ask her a few questions. Here is what she had to say:

1. Dr. Cheverton is the faculty member advisor of Best Buddies, a program for young children with disabilities. She has been involved in this for some time now, and does it through her son Jack's school.

2. Dr. Cheverton has taught at many different colleges including the College of St. Rose and U Albany. However, she chose Siena because of the community that other schools seemed to lacked. She felt that she was never really involved at St. Rose or SUNY, but something about Siena just bekons student and faculty alike to take part in its unique community.

3. Dr. Cheverton as a degree in Psychology. In college she took an intro to psych class and something "just clicked." It never felt like she was forced to learn because everything was so relevant and interesting. Studying the interactions between people fascinated her.

1. Can you tell me about a significant ongoing or academically relevant service experience in your life?

Dr. Nartey volunteered as a faculty adviser for the honors history society at Siena called "Phi Alpha Theta" in the early 90's. He coordinated events to prepare students to present their papers at history conferences at various other educational institutions, such as Hamilton College, and welcomed other chapters of the society when he organized a conference here on campus.

2. How did you decide to become a faculty member?

Dr. Nartey began his teaching career at Hampton College in Virginia. He was looking for a more stable track position, and Siena was offering a position in the history department. After a series of interviews, he was hired in 1989 and is still enthusiastic about his job after his 21st year working on campus.

3. How did you decide to pursue your field of study or discipline?

Dr. Nartey had an undeniable passion for history due to the influence pressed upon him by his high school teachers. Even at a young age, he was impressed with the depth of the knowledge that his teachers possessed, and he wished to be just like them. He followed through the footsteps of his role models and took it all the way to attaining a PhD.

This was a really awesome challenge and I got to know my professor better! :)
